Welcome to the Galápagos, the enchanted islands.
You are in a true paradise—not only for the incredible diversity of flora and fauna you’ll find here, but also for the peace and safety with which you can explore its streets.
If you’re on vacation and still deciding what to do, we offer several options below with details on how to get there and what you’ll need to enjoy each activity.
- Fishermen’s Dock
You can visit this site on your own, and we recommend going in the afternoon when the fishermen return from their work. Here you can observe the interaction between wildlife and the local people. It’s common to see sea lions resting, pelicans, seagulls, and other birds in their natural environment.
The dock is about a 5-minute walk from your accommodation. For this visit, we recommend bringing a hat and having your camera ready to capture unforgettable moments. - Las Grietas
Las Grietas are a natural rock formation with an impressive opening in the earth, where you’ll find a crystal-clear, refreshing pool.
To get there, first walk to the Main Dock, where you’ll take a water taxi ($1 per person each way) to Finch Bay Dock. From there, you’ll hike for about 10 minutes along a trail to Playa de los Alemanes. If you continue further along the path for another 10 minutes, you’ll reach Las Grietas. Just before you arrive, you’ll pass Las Salinas, a small saltwater pool, and then you’ll be at your destination.
Recommendations for your visit:
✅ Bring plenty of water
✅ Wear a hat and sunscreen
✅ Arrive in your swimsuit (there are no changing rooms)
✅ Bring your passport (required for entry)
✅ Wear closed-toe shoes for comfort (the trail is partly rocky)
✅ Bring a snorkel mask and a towel
💰 Entrance fee: $10 - Estación Beach
This is the beach closest to your lodging—ideal for relaxing and enjoying a swim in a sheltered bay. It takes about 10 minutes to get there.
Recommendations for your visit:
✅ Arrive in your swimsuit
✅ Bring a towel and sunscreen
✅ Carry water to stay hydrated
✅ Wear a hat to protect yourself from the sun
🕒 Visiting hours: 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. - Tortuga Bay
Tortuga Bay is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, with white sand and crystal-clear waters. It’s located 2 km from Puerto Ayora and is a must-see for nature and sea lovers.
To get there, leave your lodging and walk about 10 minutes to the first checkpoint, where you’ll register your details. Then continue on a 2 km hike to the first beach, known as Playa Brava (strong waves and currents—swimming is not recommended). If you walk another 10 minutes along the shore, you’ll reach a small enclosed cove where you may spot marine iguanas resting on the sand. Following a short trail will lead you to Playa Mansa, where you can rest under the shade of a mangrove.
At Playa Mansa you can snorkel and, if the water is clear, you might see small sharks, sea turtles, manta rays, and other marine species. There is often someone renting kayaks for $15 per person.
Recommendations for your visit:
✅ Arrive in your swimsuit (no changing rooms)
✅ Bring plenty of water for the hike
✅ Wear sunscreen and a hat
✅ Bring sunglasses
✅ Wear comfortable walking shoes
✅ It’s best to start early to avoid the hot sun
✅ If you prefer to return by boat, you can check availability and book in advance - Upper Santa Cruz Island by Bicycle
If you love sports and adventure, we recommend exploring the upper part of the island by bike, where you can visit one of the ranches that host the iconic Galápagos giant tortoises in their natural habitat.
To get there, take a bus to Santa Rosa town ($1 per person). From there, continue a bit further to reach a ranch such as Rancho Primicias or Rancho Chato. Both offer guided tours with more information about the tortoises and their habitat.
💰 Admission: $5 per person
After the visit, if you wish, you can ride your bike back down to the port via the bike path.
Another option is Rancho Frontier, located on Occidental Street in the Guayabillos area. To get there, take the bus that departs from Santa Cruz at 1:10 p.m. It’s best to arrive a few minutes early and ask for the Occidental bus.
Recommendations for your visit:
✅ Ensure your bike is in good condition and check the brakes before descending
✅ Wear comfortable, sporty clothing
✅ Bring enough water for the route
✅ Apply sunscreen and bring sunglasses
✅ Wear a helmet and protective gear for safety
